Acupuncture and IVF go hand in hand

Acupuncture, herbal therapy, and lifestyle care to prepare your body for assisted reproductive technologies (ART)

Acupuncture for IVF—before, during, and after—so you can feel like a whole person on the path to parenthood

Acupuncture has enhanced fertility for thousands of years, and in 2002 it entered the mainstream in this country when a pivotal study showed that acupuncture on the day of embryo transfer significantly improved IVF pregnancy rates. More recent studies show that when acupuncture is given consistently—about 10 or more treatments over several weeks or months—the benefits are even more significant. These improvements hold true for fresh and frozen transfers and for donor-egg cycles as well.

At Arrive, our focus is on preparing your body well before retrieval or transfer instead of relying on a single treatment on the day of embryo transfer. Acupuncture and herbal support are at the heart of our work together, and when time allows, we fold in other integrative tools—liver detoxification, comprehensive lab testing, and advanced evaluation of sperm health—to help optimize every stage of your IVF or IUI cycle.

Egg quality: creating healthy eggs takes time

Egg quality is one of the most important predictors of IVF success—especially for women over 35 or for those with diminished ovarian reserve or premature ovarian insufficiency. Whereas western fertility treatments increase the quantity of eggs ovulated in a given cycle, Chinese medicine focuses on egg quality. Acupuncture and herbs increase blood flow to the ovaries and uterus, support nutrient delivery, and soothe inflammation—all essential for healthy follicle development.

It takes time to impact egg quality, at least three months or more. The environment you create in the months leading up to ovulation—through acupuncture, herbs, nutrition, and lifestyle—can directly influence egg quality, implantation potential and a healthy pregnancy.

Beyond egg quality: implantation, uterine receptivity & sperm health

Egg quality is essential, but it’s not the only factor that determines whether a healthy egg becomes a healthy pregnancy. Sperm health and uterine receptivity are also important for successful fertilization and implantation. In Chinese medicine, we look at the whole body—circulation, digestion, stress, inflammation, and hormonal balance—to support these key factors and create the most welcoming environment possible for conception and a healthy pregnancy.

If you’ve experienced recurrent implantation failure or miscarriage, sometimes it’s helpful to look beyond the basics. Exploring the role of the immune system, the vaginal microbiome, or specialized sperm testing can offer valuable insight.

Freezing your eggs? Preparing matters here, too.

If you’re freezing your eggs for the future, the same principles applied to an IVF cycle can be applied during your cycle too. Supporting egg quality, circulation, and overall health in the weeks or months leading up to your retrieval can help optimize the eggs you choose to preserve.

Beyond IVF success: feeling like yourself again

Acupuncture doesn’t just support IVF success—it helps you feel like a whole person during what can be an overwhelming journey. Many of our patients say the best part of their cycle is their time with us— easing side effects, navigating the emotional ups and downs, and having a safe space to simply exhale. Some even share that they wouldn’t have the stamina or focus to get through IVF without this kind of support.

Acupuncture and integrative medicine for ART

If you’re preparing for an IUI or IVF cycle, or freezing your eggs, starting three months ahead is ideal—egg quality, uterine receptivity, and hormonal balance take time. But even if your cycle is already underway, there’s still so much we can do. We can focus on detoxification and prepare for next steps while helping you feel like a whole person again.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Research shows acupuncture can improve outcomes for fresh, frozen, and donor egg cycles when used consistently before and during an IVF cycle. A 2002 landmark study first showed that acupuncture around embryo transfer improved pregnancy rates, and later research has found even stronger results when acupuncture is given consistently over multiple weeks or months rather than as a single treatment on transfer day.

Research, and our clinical experience, shows that 9–12 acupuncture visits over the course of about three months gives the best results for both fresh and frozen IVF cycles. That said, every treatment plan is tailored to you. If you’re just starting an IVF or IUI cycle with no significant health history, you may need fewer sessions than someone who’s been trying to conceive for a while or has an underlying health challenge.

Ideally 1–3 months before egg retrieval or embryo transfer. It takes about 90–120 days for an egg to fully mature, so the environment you create in the months leading up to retrieval — through acupuncture, herbs, nutrition, and lifestyle — can directly influence egg quality, hormone balance, uterine lining, and implantation potential. If your cycle is already underway, it’s still worth starting; there’s a lot we can do even with less lead time.

Acupuncture is considered safe during IVF and pregnancy. Research has not shown it to increase miscarriage rates. In fact, some studies have found that acupuncture is associated with lower miscarriage rates, and one study found live birth rates improved by nearly 30% when acupuncture was used consistently alongside IVF compared to IVF alone.
Yes. Research shows acupuncture can support outcomes across fresh transfers, frozen embryo transfers (FET), and donor egg cycles. The timing and focus of treatment shift slightly depending on the type of cycle (for example, FET protocols often start during estrogen priming rather than ovarian stimulation), but the core benefits — improved blood flow, hormone balance, and nervous system regulation — apply across all three.
A typical plan is timed to each phase of your cycle: weekly visits 1–3 months before retrieval or transfer, increasing to twice a week during ovarian stimulation (or estrogen priming for FET), a treatment before and/or after embryo transfer itself, weekly visits through the two-week wait, and continued weekly support through the first trimester if you get a positive pregnancy test. Every plan is customized to your protocol and how your body is responding.
No. While starting 1–3 months ahead gives the most time to influence egg quality and uterine receptivity, research shows that acupuncture started even in the month before retrieval or transfer can still make a meaningful difference. If you’re already mid-cycle, we’ll focus on what will help most right now and coordinate closely with your clinic’s timeline.
Yes. The same principles that support egg quality during an IVF retrieval apply to egg freezing. Supporting blood flow, circulation, and overall health in the weeks or months before your retrieval can help optimize the eggs you choose to preserve for the future.

Acupuncture may be especially helpful here — one meta-analysis found acupuncture was 42% more effective at improving live birth rates for women who had already experienced at least one failed cycle. Beyond acupuncture, we can also look deeper at factors like immune function, the vaginal microbiome, or specialized sperm testing to help identify what might be getting in the way.

In most cases, yes. Standard IVF workups often check core hormones, but don’t always include other markers which can affect egg quality, implantation, and miscarriage risk. I offer a comprehensive, affordable lab panel with over 60 markers to fill in these gaps before or during your cycle, alongside acupuncture and herbal support. When appropriate, I also bring in functional medicine tools like the DUTCH hormone test, GI-MAP stool test, and the Evvy vaginal microbiome test to look deeper at hormones, gut health, and factors linked to implantation challenges or miscarriage history.

Yes. Sperm health is just as important as egg quality for a successful cycle. Acupuncture, combined with herbs and functional medicine, can support sperm motility, morphology, count, DNA fragmentation, and underlying inflammation or infection.
